Jason Winikoff's Postcards from Zambia

Jason Winikoff's Postcards From Zambia are a polyrhythmic, grooving, and deeply culturally-informed experiment in jazz fusion. The group plays music of and inspired by various cultures found within Zambia with a special focus on Luvale music from the Northwestern Province. In essence, the Postcards From Zambia recreate a traditional percussion ensemble through the orchestration, improvisation, and arranging tendencies of a jazz quintet. The group is an exciting case study in roots and routes and circular musical diasporas; the Postcards combine music from the African continent and the offshoots it inspired throughout the diaspora. Drummer and percussionist Jason Winikoff has spent extensive time studying under, performing, and working with Zambian dance troupes such as Lenga Navo, Likumbi lya Mize Chibolya, and Chota. Fresh off of a year-long trip to Zambia, Winikoff has assembled some of Vancouver's finest jazz musicians to bring this music to life.
