---Jason Winikoff is a US-born, Vancouver-based drummer, percussionist, educator, and music researcher. He deeply believes that sound, place, and culture are intricately connected. Winikoff has spent extensive time in Zambia, New Orleans, and Ghana studying BAM and various African and diasporic percussion traditions. He is a proud student of Kapalu Lizambo, Josephine Sombo Muzala Chipango, William Vunda, Nomakanjani, Douglas Mwila, the late Damas "Fanfan" Louis, and Geoff Clapp.
---Winikoff is as comfortable behind the drumset as he is in front of hand percussion. He is a musical chameleon with the ability to groove in diverse genres such as traditional jazz, Zambian ngoma, fusion, ceremonial Haitian, singer-songwriter, Ewe dance, rock, and bop. As an ethnomusicologist, Winikoff specializes in Luvale traditional music, timbre, BAM drumming, and ethnography. Since relocating to Canada in 2018 to pursue his Ph.D. in ethnomusicology at UBC, Jason Winikoff has been an active member of the Vancouver jazz scene.
